Is the Electoral College obsolete— even undemocratic? Five times in American history, a majority of Americans watched as the nominee with fewer votes was ushered into the White House. Can it happen again in 2020? What's the upside of letting a small portion of voters make the ultimate choice?
In his long history as journalist and editor, Jesse Wegman has watched the shape of the country shift, with increasing population in the urban areas— lending disproportionate weight to voters in sparser states. Wegman argues that this directly conflicts with America's founding principles. In his new book Let the People Pick the President, he uncovers over 700 efforts to disband the College, and debunks the most persistent myths and misconceptions about it.
Wegman says if we want more people voting, more faith in the system, and a slate of nominees forced to respond directly to the voters, it's time to eliminate the Electoral College. A contributor to the New York Times editorial board and specialist in legal affairs, he joins Kepler's This Is Now host Angie Coiro to probe this contentious issue— before it's time to vote again.
