Born in Jodhpur in the Rajasthan region of India, Alka has lived in the U.S. since the age of nine. She graduated from Stanford University and worked in advertising and PR before starting her own marketing consultancy. In 2011, she decided to devote herself to her dream of writing, getting her MFA in Creative Writing from the California College of Arts in San Francisco, California. In 2020 her dream became a reality as she published the New York Times best seller The Henna Artist, which follows the experiences of a young woman in 1950s India. Alka is currently finishing the sequel and starting on the third book in the trilogy. She’s also serving as Executive Producer on the screen adaptation of The Henna Artist.
