Looking to discover your new favorite author? Join us for our signature reading series, Story is the Thing, to hear four stellar Bay Area fiction authors read from their latest titles.

Our guests are Katie Hafner with her brilliant debut The Boys, Jon Hickey reading from Big Chief which is being touted as the "great Native American political novel", Susanna Kwan with her utterly transporting debut novel Awake in the Floating City, and critically acclaimed author, Danielle Teller, reading from her immersive new novel Forged.

The Lineup

Katie Hafner is a journalist and author who writes frequently for The New York Times and The Washington Post. She is the author of six nonfiction books, including Mother Daughter Me, a memoir; A Romance on Three Legs: Glenn Gould’s Obsessive Quest for the Perfect Piano; and Where Wizards Stay Up Late: The Origins of the Internet (with Matthew Lyon). She is host and co-executive producer of the popular podcast Lost Women of Science. She lives in San Francisco.

Jon Hickey earned his MFA at Cornell University and was a Stegner Fellow at Stanford University. He has received scholarships from the Bread Loaf Writers Conference and the Sewanee Writers Conference, and he is an enrolled member of the Lac du Flambeau Band of Lake Superior Chippewa Indians. His short fiction has appeared in Massachusetts Review, Gulf Coast Online, Virginia Quarterly Review,Meridian, and The Madison Review. Jon lives in San Francisco with his wife and two sons.

Susanna Kwan is an artist and writer from San Francisco. Awake in the Floating City is her first novel.

Danielle Teller received her medical training at McGill University, Brown University, and Yale University. She has held faculty positions at the University of Pittsburgh and Harvard University. In 2013, Danielle pursued her childhood dream of being a writer. She is the author of the novel All the Ever Afters and of one book of nonfiction, Sacred Cows: The Truth About Divorce and Marriage. She lives with her husband, Astro Teller, and their four children in Palo Alto, California.
