Each seminar combines the deep pleasure of reading an exceptional novel with the depth of a college-level lecture. We are delighted to announce that this Series will take place in person at Kepler’s for the first time in three years. Please join us! For our out-of-town attendees, we will still have an option to attend virtually.
Frankissstein, Jeanette Winterson (and Frankenstein, Mary Shelley)
Jeanette Winterson’s Frankissstein (2019) was a revelation for Kimberly. The novel (like Frankenstein’s monster itself) plays with the idea of hybrids, alternating between the speculative fiction front story—concerning the incredibly appealing trans Dr. Stein—and a backstory of historical fiction that vividly recounts Mary Shelley’s writing of Frankenstein.
The novel is complex and incredibly rich—while also being a total page-turner! Kimberly can’t think of a book that so deftly handles questions about both the distant past and the not-so-distant future. While Kimberly is not a speculative fiction lover, and although she has some quibbles with the novel’s ending—we’ll discuss!—she LOVED this original, engaging text.
The bonus? Readers who want to also feel like reading Frankenstein will not only be treated to the amazing classic that will deepen the experience of Frankissstein, but will also hear Kimberly’s insights on Shelley’s seminal work.
There are several ticket options that include all Seminars and books, book with purchase (either shipped to home or picked up at Kepler’s Books), or Seminar only. The book should be read prior to the meeting date.
