King Lear by William Shakespeare
If you just read this and said, “YES! Finally! Shakespeare!” I’m right there with you. If you were all, “Yikes, no thank you”—Kimberly urges you to rethink!
Remember: you can (theoretically) read a Shakespeare play in three hours! Reading Lear will make you smarter. You’ll end up with such a good sense of how literature stretches all the way from 1606 right up to 2022.
NOTE: we will take on Lear from both very basic (fascinating) levels of grammar and phrasing and meter, while also digging into the magic and complexity that make this masterpiece so enduring.
We will also be reading it as a PREQUEL to Jane Smiley’s super approachable and comfy and familiar and page-turning A Thousand Acres,* which will make Lear all the more interesting and relevant.
*We will cover A Thousand Acres for the first Winter/Spring Literary Seminar. More information here.
We will be hosting this two-part series on the following dates:
Monday, January 24 - 5:00-6:30 pm and
Monday, January 31 - 5:00-6:30 pm
There are several ticket options that include book with purchase (either shipped to home or picked up at Kepler’s Books) or Seminar only. The play should be read prior to the meeting date.
