The Summer Book, Tove Jansson

After England, we will make our literary way north to a remote Finnish isle where young Sophia and her grandmother spend long summer days in all sorts of very Scandinavian ways. Images of nature are so incredibly appealing in this slim masterpiece and direct, spare prose makes the book feel light, but with an enormous emotional pay off. This irresistible novella is worth reading just to suss out how Jansson manages to make her narrative stance feel so easy but so wide-ranging. This book is so charming and dark and unusual and hilarious that you will want to read everything else that Jansson has written. We will make very good use of all three of our one-hour sessions, each of which will convince you of Jansson’s unique and ultra-appealing talent.

Book will be shipped directly to you so that you may read it prior to the seminar.
