Penelope Fitzgerald’s Offshore not only won the Booker in 1979 but this gem won Kimberly’s esteem so thoroughly that she can’t believe the seminars haven’t read it before now.

Set on the Thames in 1961, Offshore unspools the tale of an off-beat and crazy-charming community living on London houseboats. Fitzgerald is at her finest with prose that is rich and charming and grounded and real, our heroine and her young daughter living out adventures very close to the “most trying years” of Fitzgerald’s own life. Called a “small and very bright treasure” and “a pocket epic” by critics, this slim novel will delight and move you.
